The Guardian: Copenhagen really is wonderful

| Sunday, April 8th, 2012 | Comments Off

On 7th April the British news paper the Guardian ran an article praising the Danish capital. Here is a small excerpt from that article:

Copenhagen really is wonderful, for so many reasons

“Denmark has just come top in the UN’s survey of global happiness – far ahead of 18th-placed Britain. One former Londoner who moved to the Danish capital three years ago can see why

We were not surprised to read last week that the Danes topped the UN’s first World Happiness Report, whereas the Brits managed a less than impressive 18th place. Since moving from Finsbury Park in London to Copenhagen three years ago with my husband Duncan, our quality of life has skyrocketed and our once staunch London loyalism has been replaced by an almost embarrassing enthusiasm for everything “Dansk”.

…..
It’s a gloriously attractive city too, with its rickety historic centre, maze of cobbled streets (including the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe) and ancient churches, palaces and government buildings, alongside brave and striking modern interjections such as the ferociously angled extension to the Royal Library, nicknamed the Black Diamond, and Henning Larsen’s Royal Opera House.

And then there’s the fabulous design, which saturates most elements of Danish life. Everywhere you look, from metro stations to schools, friends’ homes and even hairdressers, there are functional and elegant objects. The dining room of our local college is packed with Eames Eiffel chairs while children at the airport get to spill their meals on high chairs designed by Danish design maestro Arne Jacobsen.

It’s not all rosy: sometimes the cost of living leaves you speechless. A takeaway bagel, soft drink and bag of crisps, for example, sets you back £10. The winter months can also be bloody freezing and the hours of darkness long. Most Danes seem to escape to Thailand in November, but when they are at home they embrace the winter by lighting candles at every conceivable opportunity and endeavouring to create a hygge, or cosy atmosphere. They entertain at home a lot, take frequent trips to the cinema and invest in heavy-duty snow boots.

…..
The upside is that once the minute spring has sprung, Danes spend as much time as possible outdoors. There are beautiful parks, where in the summer families grill sausages (the nation’s fast food of choice) on communal barbecues, plus more than 100 public playgrounds and numerous swan-filled lakes.”

Report from the Little Mermaid Tour – one of our Copenhagen Tours

| Tuesday, June 21st, 2011 | No Comments »

A fresh report from one of our recent Copenhagen Tours

This specific tour was The Little Mermaid Tour. We started of at Nyhavn one of the most idyllic and picturesque places you’ll find in Copenhagen. Back in the 1960′ies it was a rather seedy place filled with drunk sailor and loose women, but after being restored back to its former beauty in the mid 80′ties a lot of restaurants opened and the place changed into what you see today.

At the end of Nyhavn, which is actually a canal dug out by Swedish prisoners of war, you have the Copenhagen Harbour with the new Royal Theater Play House on one side and the almost as new Opera House. Following the harbour front north towards The Little Mermaid we passed the Royal Palace and  “Amaliehaven”.  These place can also be see on other of our Copenhagen Tours – for instance The Classic Tour of Copenhagen (only for Groups)

The Royal Tender - "Chaluppen"

Expect the unexpected on any Copenhagen Tours

Just before we reached the Gefion Fountain we passed the Royal Pavilions where the Queen waits to be taken out to the Royal Yacht anchored right out side in the harbour. There were a lot of people standing around a were big and nice car, turned out to be a Royal Car. We decided to hang around to see who was coming and about 5 min. later the Royal tender or “Chaluppen” as it is also known came into sight from behind the Royal Yacht. In it was the Captain but most importantly HRH Prince Henrik. Our guests on the tour were ecstatic and got some great pictures. If you don’t believe me and want to see for your self, you just have to come on one of our next tours.

HRH Price Henrik disembarking "Chaluppen"

Below is a list of the sight you will se on The Little Mermaid Tour.

List of sight you will see:

  • Nyhavn
  • The new Theater house
  • The Opera
  • Amaliehaven
  • The Gefion fountain
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Kastellet Fortification
  • The Royal Palace Amalienborg

We hope to see you soon on this tour or one of our other Copenhagen Tours.

Classic Copenhagen Tours – and must see sights

| Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 | Comments Off

When ever you are visiting a major city around the world as a tourist, there are certain things and places you simply have to see or at least they are noted on some imaginary list in your mind. Big Ben, Empire State Building, Colosseum and so forth. the same goes for Copenhagen I guess. So no visit to Copenhagen is complete without stopping by the Little Mermaid and after that maybe Nyhavn …. and then …??.

Which Copenhagen Tours should you choose?

I honestly can’t give a “one size fit all” answer to this question. It really depends on what type of person you are and what kind of things you like and what type of experiences you are looking for when visiting a new place. Personally I like to identify the areas in a new city where the locals hang out and try to kinda blend in. That is why I always try to locate a local guide who can show me around when I go some where ….. sometimes its a friend of a friend and other times is a professional guide. In both cases I get an authentic presentation of the place ….. I really enjoy that.

On the other hand, if you don’t have very long time at your disposal a quick 2-3 hours tour around the city by bus might be the right thing to do. You would be able to cover most of the major sight in about 2-3 hours and a range of Copenhagen Tours do exactly that. If you don’t mind joining a public tour with other people and groups there are a few options at your disposal. You can find many of them on www.sightseeing.dk. If you prefer to go on a private tour of Copenhagen that can be arranged too, here at New Port Tours we specialize in customized private tours for groups of all sizes, from a family of three to groups of 50 and above. The reason for this is that we strongly believe that our customers satisfaction is closely linked to our ability to present Copenhagen in a friendly, personal ad sincere fashion.

Copenhagen Tours - The Little Mermaid

If you are more of an explorer and enjoy going on your own, there is plenty of help to be found at the Tourist Information office, located right across from The Tivoli Gardens. You can get free maps of the city and go for a walk or rent a bike a ride around to all the sights, basically you can put together all you own Copenhagen Tours and customized the days a you see fit.

No matter what you chose, we at New Port Tours are always ready to help you out and will answer all you questions as best as we can, no matter what type of experience you are looking for.

Customized Copenhagen Tours – what to expect?

We always put together our tours so that they fit with the wants and need of our clients. So no two tours are alike. When that is said, you can’t see Copenhagen without seeing Copenhagen, so some things, places and sights are “must haves”. We always try to put a contemporary and personal angle on the way we present Copenhagen to our guests and it we always make sure it is a both fun and relaxed experience for everybody. On all our tours be it a Classic Tour of Copenhagen or an special theme tour we always try to ad a sight or a story a bit out of the ordinary and not something you would expect to see or hear …. It is all part of our plan to give all of our guest a bit more than they expected and always to present Copenhagen in an new and surprising light.

Other than that we aim to take excellent care of our guest all the way through the tour and do all we can to exceed the expectations and make sure that our tour was the best of all the Copenhagen Tours they tried while visiting here.

Here is a list of sight you probably would want to see if going on a Copenhagen Tour:

  • The Little Mermaid

  • The Gefion Fountain

  • The Royal Palace

  • Nyhavn

  • Christiansborg Palace

  • The canals

  • Christianshavn

  • The Carlsberg Brewery Ground

Take a look at a short video from one of our recent Copenhagen Tours:
